About Barn Weddings

Barn weddings in Michigan are truly something special. These weddings tend to be more laid back and relaxed for guests and are focused on celebrating love outdoors amidst the beauty of the serene countryside. Barn weddings are also quite unique in style. Some are elegant while others embrace the rustic nature.

As a Southeast and Mid Michigan wedding photographer who’s photographed 70+ weddings, I’ve worked at many different kinds of weddings. From black tie soirees to outdoor inspired barn weddings to northern Michigan elopements, I’m experienced in the different types and vibes of wedding days and help preserve couples’ memories from their wedding days.

The start to every couple’s dream wedding day starts with finding the perfect venue for them. It can be overwhelming sometimes with how many different options there are across Michigan! If you’re here, you’ve likely narrowed down the type of venue you want down to something outside and in the country. These 5 barn wedding venues are ones I’ve worked and had the best experiences at. My couples were super happy with their wedding venues and loved their experiences at each place here as well!

5 Barn Wedding Venues

Impression Farms

barn wedding venue in michigan

Quick Venue Facts:

  • Location: 12 minutes west of downtown Port Huron
  • Address: 3100 Mc Lain Rd, North Street, MI 48049
  • Website: impressionfarms.com
  • Style: Classic rustic red barn with multiple outdoor ceremony spots
  • Capacity: 200 guests
  • Cost: starting at $2,500
  • Catie’s Pro-Tip: Take advantage of the fire pit here and have a s’mores bar for dessert. Guests will love the time spent by a cozy fire and enjoy socializing while making a tasty treat!

Impression Farms is located in Eastern Michigan, not far from downtown Port Huron. This classic red barn plays host to many wedding weekends and is quite peaceful while being close to town. Couples getting married here value the privacy the country side has to offer, the quietness of the area, and love a rockin’ reception. With plenty of space to dance, this venue works with some of the best DJs that will have your guests on that dance floor all night long.

I’ve been to this venue as a wedding photographer and a guest. Both experiences here were wonderful. Impression Farms offers wedding coordination services in their wedding packages, which is a service not many venues offer to the degree these services are rendered. Oftentimes venues offer venue coordination, which is a coordinator handling venue things like chair and table set up. A coordinator though will ensure the timeline of your day is on track, they’ll assist in getting your party down the aisle at the proper intervals, and take care of any issues without you knowing about them.

Impression Farms is super close to my own home, and I don’t charge travel fees for any of the barn venues on this list! If you’re on the hunt for a photographer for your barn wedding, reach out for my availability here.

Crooked River

  • Website: crookedriverwedding.com
  • Style: Classic, rustic barn with winding river on property
  • Capacity: 300 guests

  • Catie’s Pro-Tip: Host your ceremony down by the river for a picturesque and serene ceremony. Don’t worry about accessibility- the venue has golf carts for those that can’t walk down the stairs!

Crooked River Weddings is located in northern Michigan in Gladwin. This venue is the perfect spot for a little get-away wedding. Your guests will love traveling up north and being surrounded by the peaceful nature of the property. With a house for your wedding party to stay in, a wandering river through the property, and a field for couples to frolic through, this wedding venue is a great choice for your barn wedding.

My favorite detail of this barn venue is the large porch off the back. Looking over rolling fields of flowers and tall grass, this space was the perfect place for Chelsea and Drew to do their private vows with one another. The sunset was also amazing on this day, and perfectly set across the field. The guests loved this venue and were so happy throughout the night!

Hilltop Memory Makers

Quick Venue Facts:

  • Location: 40 minutes northeast of Grand Rapids
  • Address: 15401 W Cannonsville Rd, Coral, MI 49322
  • Website: hilltopmemorymakers.net
  • Style: Classic red, rustic barn with an expansive property and multiple ceremony sites
  • Capacity: 150 guests
  • Cost: $6,000 for Saturday weddings
  • Catie’s Pro-Tip: Host your wedding ceremony during sunset like Tabitha and Lane did for the dreamiest ceremony photos!

Hilltop Memory Makers is such a dreamy barn wedding venue. I loved the layout of this property and the flow between the two barns. The first smaller barn is home to the bar area and where guests will be for cocktail hour. The larger barn will be where your reception is since it has a dance floor, long farmhouse style tables, and high ceilings. Hilltop Memory Makers also has 5 outdoor ceremony spots couples can choose from.

My favorite little detail from this wedding venue are the gold chandeliers in the smaller barn. It made the perfect area to hang Tabitha’s gown for a detail photo, and it adds an elegant touch to the venue. This smaller barn is also the perfect spot for a larger getting ready area if you want separate spaces for each party!

I so loved my time working at this wedding venue and I’d love to go back! If you’re getting married here, please reach out to check my availability for your barn wedding!

Odins Owl

barn wedding venue in Michigan

Quick Venue Facts:

  • Location: 15 minutes southeast of Frankenmuth
  • Address: 8679 Birch Run Rd, Millington, MI 48746
  • Website: odinsowl.com
  • Style: Mystical and ethereal feeling barn venue with woods surrounding the backside of the property
  • Capacity: 220 guests
  • Cost: Average cost is $16,500
  • Catie’s Pro-Tip: While summer is perfectly green, host your wedding in the fall here and you’ll be married in a wonderland of oranges, reds, and browns.

Odin’s Owl is actually nestled behind a moto-cross/dirt-bike track in Millington. Don’t let the track scare you though- this property is incredibly peaceful and was not active during my time working here. Settled up against trees, this wooded barn is unique in that it is designed after an owl. Guests thought this was incredibly unique and loved how different it was from any other barn venue in Michigan.

While this venue does have a couple suites labeled as “getting ready” spaces, I found it best for couples to utilize an off-site space for getting ready. The spaces were very small with little seating and was more for tucking away your personal belongings and hiding from guests as they entered before the ceremony. I recommend using a hotel room, as it will be much more spacious when you get ready!

  • Catie’s Pro-Tip: Schedule plenty of time for portraits at this venue! There’s so much variety from the willow tree to black barn to lush green vineyards, you’ll want a little extra time to see it all and take portraits everywhere.

Westers Family Vineyard is located just outside of Jackson Michigan and is home to a lush green vineyard. Couples getting married here can expert a serene experience and a full service wedding. This venue offers full service planning with their full rental package- this is something not many venues offer and I highly encourage couples to take advantage of this perk! The planning company Westers partners with is truly amazing and works so well with each couple.

Couples hosting their wedding day here can expect a more upscale experience than typical rustic barn venues provide. With tents available for the property, there’s cover available outdoors and guests love the porch attached to the venue. If you’re getting married at Westers, I would love to connect to check my availability for you!

3 Tips for Planning Your Barn Wedding

Hire a Planner

I am so pro-wedding planner! Wedding planners are great at helping you stay within budget, planning the logistics of your day, and so much more. They solve issues often behind the scenes so you don’t have to worry about it day of. I highly recommend working with a planner to keep all your wants and details in order!

Have Outdoor Activities

I don’t think I’ve been to a single outdoor wedding that didn’t have cornhole or some type of activity or game! Not everyone loves dancing at weddings and those guests are the ones to typically go for games like cornhole. If you have kids at your wedding this is also a great activity for them! It can keep them away a bit from the bar and the hustle & bustle of things and burn some of that energy they probably will have!

Prepare for Weather

Always consider the season when picking a venue! Don’t let weather keep you from a certain venue- just make accommodations and a plan. You can purchase handheld fans and water bottles for those hot summer days, or provide blankets and a hot cocoa bar for colder fall weather. You could also rent some portable outdoor heaters, with venue permission of course!
