At the end of April I attended a workshop lead by The Fourniers at Venue3Two. The Fourniers are luxury wedding photographers based in Michigan and work all over the world. Getting an opportunity to learn from such experienced photographers was a privilege I won’t be forgetting any time soon. The education was mostly centered on the back-end of business work and submitting to publications rather than the technical camera stuff. Workshops such as these are great opportunities to network and meet new people outside of your area of expertise. I always walk away from workshops reflecting on what was taught and who I met.

There’s always a lot of debate in the photography community about attending styled shoots. Here’s my take: have fun. Styled shoots should always be disclosed that it is not a real wedding, but I don’t see an issue with going or sharing the images. It’s fun to create in a low pressure setting where if you mess up, there’s no consequence. In fact, I like these events to test out new equipment so I’m not showing up on a wedding day with a camera or flash I have no clue how to use. I really pushed myself to experiment with film for this workshop. Film isn’t currently in my offerings, but it’s something I absolutely love and have always wanted to learn. I used this opportunity to see how film can work & be used on a wedding day without the high pressure setting.

I bought a Nikon f801s at the beginning of this year and a bunch of different film to try. I knew absolutely nothing about film. My first go around with it was during our Disney trip, actually. I have no images to share though because I messed up the rolls and accidentally exposed them. Oops. I can’t imagine if I just brought that to a wedding and messed it up because I didn’t know how to store film. While I’m sad to not have any photos from our trip, I’m glad it happened in a place I’ve been to several times and that I learned what not to do.
